2026 USPS, UPS & FedEx Holiday Shipping Deadlines for Christmas

11 nov 2025

If you ship with Ground services, your real Christmas deadline is December 15 to 17. That is the one line in this post worth putting on your warehouse wall. Everything after that date costs more per package, and in the last week it costs a lot more.

Below are the published 2026 ship-by dates from USPS, FedEx and UPS, one combined table so you can see all three on the same line, and a short method for turning carrier dates into a store cutoff you can actually hold. Dates apply to the contiguous U.S. unless noted. Carriers call these "recommended" dates, not guarantees, so build in a day of margin.

One timing note that catches sellers every few years: Hanukkah starts the evening of December 4 in 2026, three weeks before Christmas. If you sell gifts, your first peak-week is the last week of November, not the second week of December.

USPS service Ship by (lower 48) Notes
USPS Ground Advantage Thu, Dec 17 AK/HI/PR: 10+ day service standard; check your ZIP pair on usps.com
First-Class Mail Thu, Dec 17 Same date for AK/HI/PR
Priority Mail Fri, Dec 18 Same date for AK/HI/PR
Priority Mail Express Sat, Dec 19 Same date for AK/HI/PR
International (First-Class Pkg / Priority Mail Intl) Wed, Dec 9 Priority Mail Express Intl: Dec 16
Military APO/FPO/DPO, Ground Advantage Wed, Nov 4 First-Class and Priority to military: Dec 9

Ground Advantage is the service most poly-mailer shippers use, so December 17 is the date that matters for most small parcels. Priority Mail buys you one extra day; Express buys two.

FedEx 2026 holiday shipping deadlines

FedEx service Ship by Notes
FedEx Ground Economy Tue, Dec 15 The earliest cutoff of any major domestic service
FedEx Ground / Home Delivery Dec 17–23 By transit days: 5-day Dec 17, 4-day Dec 18, 3-day Dec 21, 2-day Dec 22, 1-day Dec 23
FedEx Express Saver Mon, Dec 21
FedEx 2Day / 2Day A.M. Tue, Dec 22
First / Priority / Standard Overnight Wed, Dec 23
FedEx SameDay Thu, Dec 24 Metro areas only

The Ground range matters. A Los Angeles warehouse shipping to New York is a 5-day lane, so its FedEx Ground deadline is December 17. The same warehouse shipping to Phoenix is a 1-day lane and can hold until December 23. If you ship from more than one location, your cutoff is set by your longest lane, not your average one.

UPS 2026 holiday shipping deadlines

Source: UPS Holiday Shipping Schedule. UPS publishes its Ground dates by lane rather than as a single date, and historically finalizes its year-end chart later than USPS and FedEx. Confirm your lanes on ups.com before you publish a customer-facing cutoff.

UPS service Ship by Notes
UPS Ground Varies by lane Check ups.com/ctc for your origin/destination; plan on Dec 15–17 for cross-country
UPS 3 Day Select Mon, Dec 21
UPS 2nd Day Air Tue, Dec 22
UPS Next Day Air Wed, Dec 23

UPS closures that affect your pickups: Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov 26), Christmas Day (Fri, Dec 25) and New Year's Day (Fri, Jan 1). On December 24 there is no UPS Ground pickup; Air pickups must be arranged by December 18.

All three carriers on one line

If you only want one table, use this one. It reads: "If I ship on this date, what is the cheapest service that still lands before Christmas?"

Ship on or before Cheapest service that still arrives Which carriers
Tue, Dec 15 Ground Economy / Ground (long lanes) FedEx Ground Economy; UPS Ground cross-country
Thu, Dec 17 Ground USPS Ground Advantage, First-Class; FedEx Ground 5-day; UPS Ground most lanes
Fri, Dec 18 Priority / 4-day ground USPS Priority Mail; FedEx Ground 4-day
Sat, Dec 19 Express (USPS) USPS Priority Mail Express
Mon, Dec 21 3-day air / 3-day ground FedEx Express Saver; UPS 3 Day Select; FedEx Ground 3-day
Tue, Dec 22 2-day air FedEx 2Day; UPS 2nd Day Air
Wed, Dec 23 Overnight FedEx Overnight; UPS Next Day Air

Notice how the cheap options disappear first. Between December 17 and December 21 you move from Ground to 3-day air, which on a 1-lb poly mailer roughly doubles to triples the label cost. Hitting the Ground date is where the money is, not the overnight date.

Setting your own store cutoff

The carrier date is not your cutoff. Your cutoff is the carrier date minus your handling time, counted from the acceptance scan, not from when the label is printed. Here is the method we recommend to our wholesale customers:

  1. Pick your base service. For most poly-mailer shippers that is USPS Ground Advantage or FedEx/UPS Ground. Base date for 2026: December 17 (December 15 if you use FedEx Ground Economy or ship cross-country UPS Ground).
  2. Subtract your handling time. If orders placed today leave tomorrow, subtract one business day. If you batch and ship every other day, subtract two. Count only days the carrier actually picks up.
  3. Count from the scan. A label printed on the 17th and scanned on the 18th missed the deadline. In peak week, schedule pickups or drop off before the counter closes, and keep the acceptance receipt.
  4. Stock packaging by mid-November. Running out of mailers in week 50 is the most avoidable way to miss a cutoff. JiaroPack ships poly mailers and bubble mailers by the case from four U.S. warehouses (Los Angeles, Houston, New Jersey, Savannah), so a reorder reaches most of the country by Ground in 1–3 days. See poly mailers and bubble mailers.
  5. Publish the cutoff and update it daily. A banner that says "Order by Dec 16 for Christmas delivery with standard shipping" removes the support tickets. After that date, switch the banner to the air option, and after December 23, say so plainly.

One packaging point for the air week: if you upgrade to 2-day or overnight, the package goes through more sorts and more belts, not fewer. A 2 mil poly mailer that is fine for Ground is still fine for air, but this is not the week to try a thinner film to save a cent.

If you ship anything over 18 inches on a side, read our note on the 18-inch rule before peak; dimensional surcharges do not pause for the holidays.

Hanukkah is early in 2026

Hanukkah runs from the evening of Friday, December 4 through Saturday, December 12, 2026. For Hanukkah gifts to arrive before the first night, Ground shipments need to leave by about December 1, and orders placed Thanksgiving weekend (November 26–29) need to be packed and scanned the following Monday at the latest. If your Black Friday promotion runs late into the weekend, that Monday is the real deadline, not a December date.

FAQ

Are carrier holiday deadlines guaranteed?

No. USPS, FedEx and UPS all publish them as recommended ship-by dates. Money-back guarantees on Express and Air services are typically suspended or limited during peak. Treat the dates as "ship by this day and you will very likely make it," and keep a day of margin for weather.

Does "ship by" mean the label date or the scan date?

The scan date. A label is just a PDF until the carrier accepts the package. In peak week, get an acceptance scan the same day the label is created.

What if my package misses the Ground deadline?

Move up one tier. December 18 still works with USPS Priority Mail or FedEx Ground on a 4-day lane; December 21 works with FedEx Express Saver or UPS 3 Day Select; December 22 with 2-day air; December 23 with overnight. Each step up roughly doubles the label cost on a small parcel, so the earlier you decide, the cheaper the fix.

Do these dates apply to Alaska and Hawaii?

Only partly. USPS Priority Mail and Express dates are the same for AK/HI, but Ground Advantage to AK/HI has a 10-day-plus service standard, so check your specific ZIP pair on usps.com. FedEx and UPS Ground to AK/HI are air-based and have their own lane dates.

When should I reorder poly mailers and bubble mailers for peak?

By mid-November. Peak-week reorders compete with everyone else's inbound freight, and a stockout in the week of December 14 means paying air rates to ship orders that could have gone Ground. If you are not sure of your volume, a pallet of your top two sizes is cheaper than one week of upgraded labels.
