How to Address a Bubble Mailer: Label Placement, Return Address & Examples
The quick answer
To address a bubble mailer, write or print the recipient's name and full delivery address in the center of the front, and your return address in the upper-left corner of the same side. Run both parallel to the long edge, keep any label flat and off the seam, and put postage in the upper-right corner.
That is the whole rule. The rest of this guide covers what goes wrong in practice: the flap, glossy poly that smears ink, labels that wrinkle over the seam, and what USPS, UPS and FedEx each ask for.
Where everything goes on a bubble mailer
A bubble mailer has a smooth front and a back that carries the flap and adhesive strip. Everything goes on the front.
| Zone | Position on the front | What goes there |
|---|---|---|
| Return address | Upper-left corner | Your name or business, street, city, state, ZIP |
| Postage | Upper-right corner | Stamp or printed postage in the correct amount |
| Recipient address | Center, parallel to the longest side | Name, street, city, state, ZIP+4 |
Keep all three on the same side. USPS warns that improper addressing can get a piece returned, and splitting the address and return address across sides is a common way to do it.
Formatting basics
- Left-justify every line and use simple sans-serif type in dark ink on a light background. That is USPS's addressing standard for machine-read mail.
- Use two-letter state abbreviations, and add the ZIP+4 code when you have it.
- If you print the address yourself, use at least 8-point type.
Handwriting vs. shipping label vs. address sticker
USPS's advice is to type and print labels whenever you can, and handwriting is the fallback. Here is how the three options compare on a bubble mailer.
| Method | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Handwritten | A few shipments, dropped off in person | Smearing on glossy poly, red ink, and writing that scanners cannot read |
| Printed shipping label (4x6) | Any carrier label, and every shipment past a handful a day | Wrinkles over the seam; tape over the barcode |
| Return-address sticker | Your return address only | Placing it on the back or flap instead of the upper-left of the front |
If you do write by hand on a poly bubble mailer, use a permanent marker, press lightly so you do not dent the bubbles, and let the ink dry before stacking. USPS also says to avoid red ink and anything that smears.
For anything beyond a few packages a week, print. A 4x6 direct thermal label printed from your carrier or shipping software gives you a clean barcode and a readable address every time.
Common mistakes that cause delays or returns
- Putting the label on the back or over the flap. FedEx says to use the smooth front of an envelope or poly mailer and never the back flap. The flap and seam create ridges that can wrinkle a label and blur the barcode.
- Wrapping the label around an edge. FedEx advises against wrapping labels around edges or placing them on undersides.
- Taping over the barcode. FedEx notes that even clear tape can reflect light and stop a scanner reading the code. If a label will not stay down, tape its edges only.
- Leaving an old label on a reused mailer. UPS and FedEx both say to remove or cover old labels and barcodes.
- Splitting the addresses across sides. USPS wants the delivery address, return address and postage on the same side.
- Skipping the copy inside. UPS recommends a duplicate address label inside the package, and FedEx suggests printing two copies. For a mailer, a packing slip with both addresses works.
- Using ink that smears. USPS advises avoiding red pen and any ink that smears, and glossy poly smears easily.
What USPS, UPS and FedEx ask for
| Carrier | Where the address goes | Also required or advised |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | Return address in the upper-left corner of the front; delivery address parallel to the longest side; all elements on the postage side (USPS) | Print or type labels when possible, avoid red or smearing ink, use ZIP+4 (USPS tips); left-justified lines, dark ink on a light background, 8-point minimum (DMM 602) |
| UPS | Label on a flat surface of the item | Duplicate label inside with delivery and return details; remove or cover old labels; seal with shipping tape, not masking tape (UPS) |
| FedEx | On envelopes and poly mailers, the smooth front and never the back flap; on boxes, the top or largest side at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) from the edges | No tape over the barcode; no wrapping around edges; print two copies and put one inside; remove old labels (FedEx) |

Addressing many bubble mailers at once
Past a handful of packages a day, handwriting costs time and adds errors. A simple batch routine:
- Export the day's orders from your store or shipping software.
- Print the labels in bulk on a thermal printer using 4x6 labels.
- Press each label flat onto the center of the mailer's front, away from the seam, with firm pressure.
- Slip a packing slip inside with both addresses on it.
Most carrier labels already include your return address, so a separate return-address sticker is only for mailers you address by hand. If a label lifts at the corners, tape its edges only and keep the barcode clear.

FAQ
Where does the return address go on a bubble mailer?
In the upper-left corner of the front, on the same side as the recipient address and the postage.
Which side of a bubble mailer is the front?
The smooth side without the flap and adhesive strip.
Can you write directly on a bubble mailer?
Yes. Write on the smooth front with a permanent marker, press lightly, and let the ink dry. A printed label is more reliable.
Do I need a return address?
Yes. If the package cannot be delivered, the return address is how it gets back to you.
Should I put a copy of the address inside?
UPS and FedEx both advise it. A packing slip with both addresses does the job.
How many stamps does a bubble mailer need?
It depends on weight and size. See how many stamps a bubble mailer needs.
